Behind each sailing experience aboard Windy is our outstanding, diverse, and passionate crew. This week, meet Eric Schiffner, a member of the Boat Crew and First Mate!
Hometown: Chicago, IL
Years with Windy: 6 years
Alter ego: Just a sailor. I work on other boats if I’m not working on Windy.
Dream vacation: Circumnavigating the world! (It’s in the works)
Currently reading: Just finished Captain Fatty’s “Buy Outfit and Sail”
Favorite place in Chicago: Don’t have one, I can’t pick a favorite. Maybe biking around the lakefront trail. Yep lakefront trail.
Describe a typical day on the job.
I show up, make sure everything is running and doing what it is supposed to do be doing on the boat. Same thing with crew, make sure they’re all okay and doing what they’re supposed to be doing. Assisting the captain in anyway needed.
Do you have a favorite fun fact or piece of history from the storytelling on Windy?
I like how all the docents all come from different creative backgrounds and so all the stories come into their own and are unique, like penguins and John Seena the wrestler fighting near the lighthouse during an architecture sail.
Your experience of sailing, in five words or less.
Still sailing, not stopping.
What is your favorite memory from working on Windy?
South wind. Just kidding. Transit 2013 Tall Ships, all of it.
